PlayStation 4 'starting to sell out'

Sony's PlayStation 4 was launched in the UK at midnight and is already "starting to sell out".
Fans camped overnight for a chance to get their hands on one of the consoles.
The first-come first-served launch was considered one of the only ways for people to get hold of a console before Christmas.
Amazon said customers who had not pre-ordered before 13 November would not receive a console in time for Christmas.
The UK launch comes two weeks after the PS4 was launched in the US and a week after Microsoft's Xbox One was launched worldwide. Both consoles sold over a million in the first 24 hours.
In a statement to the BBC a Sony spokesman said: "We are starting to sell out - very rapidly but [we] will continue to work with all parts of the supply chain including our partners at retail to get more, as and when we can."
The company said it was facing "unprecedented" demand and it would be setting up a stock-tracker website to help customers find "those elusive units".
The launches are seen as a fight for dominance in the key Christmas season says the BBC's technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones.
Imran Choudhary was the first in the queue outside the venue in Covent Garden, London.
"It was always my goal to try and be one of the first people in the country to get hold of a PS4," he said.
Online scams
The chief executive of Sony's computer entertainment division, Andrew House, said: "We are trying to create a much more social and connected feeling. The whole goal of PlayStation 4 is to connect people via play, in a way that they maybe have not had before."
Customers who had placed online pre-orders with Amazon before 6 August were given the option of receiving their console on release day.
Anyone ordering after 14 November will have to wait until after Christmas for delivery, the company said.
The console was sold out on Game's website and only people who had paid a deposit when pre-ordering were guaranteed to receive a console before Christmas.
Customers have been warned to be careful of online scams involving consoles. NetNames, a company which advises brands on protecting their online reputation, said it had seen an increase in marketplace websites offering cheap consoles, sometimes in countries where they have not yet been launched.

"To avoid falling victim to the latest online scams, consumers need to remember that if the price seems too good to be true, it probably is," said NetNames product director of brand protection, Haydn Simpson.
Both the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 have suffered problems after their launches in the US and worldwide.
Users of the Xbox One reported that the console's disc drive made a loud noise when they tried to insert a disc and in some cases couldn't read discs at all. Microsoft responded by offering a replacement console and a free game download to anyone affected by the problem.
Sony published a troubleshooting guide after some users complained that a blue light continuously flashed on the front of the PS4 console affecting its operation.

Blackberry shakes up senior management

Blackberry once dominated the smartphone market but has struggled recently
Struggling smartphone maker Blackberry has shaken up its top management as part of its on-going reorganization.

The firm's chief financial officer, Brian Bidulka, will be replaced by James Yersh who has previously served as controller and head of compliance.

The chief financial officer and chief operating officer will leave the firm with no replacements announced.

This comes just weeks after the firm appointed a new interim chief executive as it shelved a plan to sell itself.

Blackberry named John Chen as the interim chief executive officer (CEO) as it announced it had abandoned a planned sale to its biggest shareholder, Fairfax Financial Holdings.

The management changes are the first major move made by Mr Chen.

'Working more closely'
Blackberry once dominated the smartphone market, but has seen its fortunes dwindle in recent years,

It has been hurt by the success and popularity of smartphones launched by rivals such as Apple and Samsung. Its attempts to boost its market share have not yielded the desired results.

In September, it reported a net loss of $965m (£597m) for the second quarter, blaming poor sales of its new smartphone, the Z10.

The firm has also announced a plan to cut 4,500 jobs, or 40% of its workforce, to reverse the giant losses.

Mr Chen said the management changes were aimed at refining the company's strategy "to ensure we deliver the best devices, mobile security and device management".

"I look forward to working more directly with the talented teams of engineers, and the sales and marketing teams around the world to facilitate the BlackBerry turn-around and to drive innovation," he added. Referral Banners

Blackberry shakes up senior management

Blackberry recently announced a 40% cut in its workforce

Shares in struggling smartphone maker Blackberry have fallen 16% after it announced it had abandoned a plan to sell itself to its biggest shareholder, Fairfax Financial Holdings.

Instead, it intends to raise $1bn (£627m) in fresh financing.

Chief executive Thorsten Heins will step down and former Sybase chief executive John Chen will serve as interim chief executive.

Last month, Blackberry reported a second-quarter net loss of $965m.

Those losses were blamed on poor sales of its new smartphone, the Z10.

'Substantial cash'
Fairfax was planning to lead a consortium of firms in a takeover of Blackberry worth $4.7bn.

But that plan, announced last month, has fallen through.

Last week, Reuters reported that Fairfax was struggling to raise the financing needed for the deal.

Instead, Fairfax, which owns a 10% stake in Blackberry, is contributing $250m to the new fund-raising.

"This financing provides an immediate cash injection on terms favourable to Blackberry, enhancing our substantial cash position," said Barbara Stymiest, chair of Blackberry's board of directors.

In September, the company announced a plan to cut 4,500 jobs, or 40% of its workforce, to reverse giant losses.

The interim chief executive, John Chen, acknowledged the challenge ahead: "Blackberry is an iconic brand with enormous potential - but it's going to take time, discipline and tough decisions to reclaim our success."

Some analysts remain sceptical about the firm's prospects.

"Now we're back to the downward spiral," said BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis.

"They've got $1bn more cash that buys them time. The drumbeat of negativity is likely to continue."

Apple buys motion sensor maker PrimeSense

Gesture-based control is one of the fast-growing trends across various sectors
Apple has purchased PrimeSense, an Israeli firm that specialises in making 3D motion detection technology.

PrimeSense is best known for developing gesture control for Microsoft's Kinect console, and has made strides towards bringing the technology to mobile.

Apple's deal is likely to spark speculation about its plans to develop new products such as Apple TV.

Apple confirmed the deal but did not disclose the financial details. Some reports said it had paid $360m (£222m).

"Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans," an Apple spokesperson was quoted as saying by the Financial Times and tech blog AllThingsD.

'Mega trend'
The deal comes at a time when firms are increasingly experimenting with gesture control.
In October 2011, Apple filed for a patent for new ways to control devices that do not involve physical contact.

Its filing, entitled "Real Time Video Process Control Using Gestures", talked about allowing users to "throw" content - the ability to transfer it from one of the firm's products to another - using contact-free hand movements.

Analysts said that acquiring a firm that specialises in making motion sensor technology could help Apple offer such features.

"Usage of gesture-based, touch-less control of devices is one of the big mega trends in the industry right now," Nitin Bhat, a partner with consulting firm Frost & Sullivan told the BBC.

"From Apple's perspective it looks like an attempt to make its current gadgets a lot more attractive by offering such a feature on them.

"It could also look to incorporate this technology in future portfolio of devices which could include an Apple TV," he added.

'Ability to observe'
Earlier this year, PrimeSense unveiled the advances it has made in incorporating its technology in mobile devices.

By shrinking down the sensor used in the Kinect, the firm showed it working with a Nexus 10 tablet at a Google developers' conference in May.

According to PrimeSense, its 3D sensing technology gives digital devices "the ability to observe a scene in three dimensions".

It said that once it has observed the movements, it translates them into a "synchronized image stream... just like humans do".

The firm's technology then processes these images and translates them into information such as:

Identification of people, their body properties, movements and gestures
Classification of objects such as furniture
Location of walls and floor
The firm has also launched a 3D scanner which, it says, allows "anyone to scan items in their own environment and print them out on a 3D printer".

Global launch for Microsoft Xbox One console

One of the X-Box One Game
Microsoft's Xbox One game console went on sale in the UK at midnight.

About 300 game shops and 100 Tesco stores across the UK stayed open so gamers could buy the device.

Microsoft held launch events in London, New York and Los Angeles to mark the arrival of the successor to the Xbox 360.

The launch comes a week after the US launch of Sony's PlayStation 4 and sees the two start their fight for dominance during the key Christmas season.

No advantage
Although the PS4 launched first in the US, it will not go on sale in the UK and Europe until 29 November. By contrast the Xbox One went on sale in 13 countries on Friday, 22 November. Neither console is set to be available in Japan until 2014.

Marc Whitten - and chief producer officer, Xbox One, told the BBC Microsoft had experienced an unprecedented number of pre-orders for the Xbox, far exceeding those of the Xbox 360. "I feel very very good about where we are. Today's launch is just the beginning of an amazing journey."

Launches are typically staggered so console makers keep manufacturing costs down, to give makers time to translate content into different languages, and to ensure deals covering what media can be seen on the gadget are in place.

In the UK the Xbox One is expected to cost about £429 (514 euros) and the PlayStation 4 £349 (418 euros).

The more expensive Xbox includes a bundled Kinect sensor that does a better job of spotting movement and hearing sounds than the first generation of the device.

Microsoft also has ambitions for its console to act as a hub for anything seen on a TV, and the device can act as a controller for cable and satellite set-top boxes. Microsoft's Skype net calling system is also integrated into the device.

The technical specifications of the two devices are broadly similar and the graphics on games are much improved on the preceding generation of consoles. Experts suggest that Sony's PS4 has the edge on graphics and early reports revealed that two games - Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts - would play in higher resolution on the PS4.

Both consoles attempt to round out the social side of gaming, giving owners tools and services that let them play with or against friends or find opponents online.

"If history has anything to say about it, core gamers tend to favour Sony," said Brian Blau, research director at analyst firm Gartner. "There is nothing I've seen to say that one platform is going to have an advantage over the other."
Rob Crossley, associate editor of ComputerAndVideoGames.com, called Microsoft's build up to the launch "luckless and calamitous" because it had had to drop features, such as restrictions on used games, that had been widely criticised.

"With Sony's PlayStation 4 being such a similar device and £80 cheaper, Microsoft will face significant challenges convincing shoppers that Xbox One is the smarter investment," he added.

In 2013, Microsoft and Sony face a very different games market than that seen when the Xbox 360 and PS3 were launched. The past few years have seen the rise of indie and casual games, a renaissance in PC gaming and the emergence of rivals such as Valve, which is preparing its own gaming gadget.

Microsoft's Xbox One reviewed

Microsoft's Xbox One is to be released on November 22, between the Sony PlayStation 4's US debut on 15 November and its UK release on 29 November.

It has an improved Kinect motion sensor but slightly less raw processing power than Sony's rival console.

Sony responds to PS4 glitch reports with guide

Sony has published a troubleshooting guide for users experiencing problems with the new PlayStation 4.
Sony's latest game console saw robust sales in the hours after its launch

Some users have complained about a blue light continuously flashing on their consoles, affecting its operation.

Sony said this could be triggered by various issues, including a problem with the PS4's power supply, hard drive or hardware or TV compatibility.

The PS4 is Sony's latest gaming console. It sold more than one million units within 24 hours of its US launch.

The company said the number of systems affected by the issue represented less than 0.4% of units shipped to date.

"This is within our expectations for a new product introduction, and the vast majority of PS4 feedback has
been overwhelmingly positive," Sony said in a statement.

'Isolated incidents'
Some of the users highlighted the issues on Sony's US PlayStation forum.

"My PS4 turns on, blinks blue, turns white and won't connect to my TV," posted a user by the name of Newender.

Another user, Juggalugalotus, said: "Mine just blinks blue and I don't get any audio or video. Tried all four of my HDMI cables and checked all of the settings on the TV. Nothing.

"Basically we bought a $400 [£250] paperweight."

Sony said it was "closely monitoring for additional reports, but we think these are isolated incidents".

According to Sony, some of the problems associated with the blinking of the blue light could include no audio or video output to the TV and the console powering off.

The company has recommended that users facing such issues turn off the console completely by pressing the power button for seven seconds.

It has also advised users to make sure that the hard drive "is properly seated" in its bay, saying a loose connection can prevent the console from powering on completely.

LG investigates Smart TV

LG investigates Smart TV 'unauthorised spying' claim
LG is investigating allegations that some of its TVs send details about their owners' viewing habits back to the manufacturer even if the users have activated a privacy setting.

It follows a blog by a UK-based IT consultant who detailed how his Smart TV was sending data about which channels were being watched.

His investigation also indicated that the TVs uploaded information about the contents of devices attached to the TV.

It could mean LG has broken the law.

The Information Commissioner's Office told the BBC it was looking into the issue.

"We have recently been made aware of a possible data breach which may involve LG Smart TVs," said a spokesman.

"We will be making enquiries into the circumstances of the alleged breach of the Data Protection Act before deciding what action, if any, needs to be taken."

When the consultant - Hull-based Jason Huntley - contacted the South Korean company he was told that by using the TV he had accepted LG's terms and conditions, and that any remaining concerns should be directed to the retailer who had sold him the screen.

But when the BBC contacted LG, it indicated it was looking into the complaint.

"Customer privacy is a top priority at LG Electronics and as such, we take this issue very seriously," said a spokesman.

"We are looking into reports that certain viewing information on LG Smart TVs was shared without consent.

"LG offers many unique Smart TV models which differ in features and functions from one market to another, so we ask for your patience and understanding as we look into this matter."

Security fears
Mr Huntley said he had first come across the issue in October when he had begun researching how his Smart TV had been able to show his family tailored adverts on its user interface.

Digging into the TV's menu system, he had noticed that an option called "collection of watching info" had been switched on by default, he said.

After switching it off, he had been surprised to find evidence that unencrypted details about each channel change had still been transmitted to LG's computer servers, but this time a flag in the data had been changed from "1" to "0" to indicate the user had opted out

"That's a terrible implementation of the idea," Mr Huntley told the BBC.
"It still sends the traffic but labels it saying I didn't want it to be sent.

""It's actually worse, I think, than if they'd not offered the optout in the first place since it allows the user to believe nothing is being sent."

He had then attached an external hard drive to the TV's USB slot, expecting that the screen might simply report that he had been watching material from an external device, he said.
Instead he had found the name of each media file stored on the drive - including photos labelled with his children's names - had been sent back to LG.

He had confirmed this had been the case by creating a mock video clip that he had named "midget porn", which had then showed up in unencrypted traffic sent back to LG, he said.

Mr Huntley suggested that even if LG had never inspected the data, it could still pose a security risk as hackers could take advantage of the practice.
"I can't prove that this was being actively logged by LG, but nevertheless it was being transmitted in the clear across the internet's backbone to wherever the servers are located," he said.

A spokesman for LG said the company intended to comment further "shortly".

iPad Air Revealed At Apple Launch Event

Apple has unveiled a slimmed-down version of its iPad tablet, but will charge customers up to £739 to get their hands on one.

New versions of the iPad unveiled
According to "Skynews.com". The fifth generation of the device will be known as the iPad Air and will be available from November 1.

The tablet, which was launched at an event in San Francisco, weighs around 470g, is 20% thinner than its predecessor and comes in three colours - white, silver and black.

It will run iOS 7 and features a 9.7-inch Retina display, as well as a more powerful processor, although the fingerprint scanner included with the iPhone 5S does not replace the home button.

The cheapest wifi-only model, which comes with 16GB of storage, will be priced at £399, while the 128GB version will cost £639.

thinner than its predecessor
Customers will have to spend between £499 and £739 for an iPad Air capable of connecting to a mobile network.

The launch came on the day Nokia revealed its first ever tablet, the Lumia 2520.

It follows the release of cut-price gadgets including Tesco's £119 Hudl and the £99 MyTablet, which is available at Argos.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said although some experts doubted the
iPad's potential when it launched more than three years ago, the product had gone from strength to strength.
"We really believed in our vision, and iPad has gone on to become one of the most successful products in Apple's history and one of the most successful in the industry," he said.
The iPad Air is lighter

"Now everyone seems to be making a tablet, even some of the doubters."
As well as the iPad Air, Apple also announced that its newest iPad mini, which features a 7.9-inch Retina display, will be priced at £319.
Will Findlater, the global online editor of Stuff magazine, said: "There is no doubt that within the field of tablets, Apple is going to remain the market leader."The new iPads are largely as we were expecting, but there are some surprises - the fact that the iPad mini hasn't just got an improved screen, but it also has Apple's latest A7 chip, as the iPad Air does, which is a massive step up in power from the previous capability.

"It's become a more serious device and will appeal to a wider audience."

An update to Apple's OS X operating system, known as Mavericks, as well as improvements to its iWork and iLife suites of programmes, will be available free of charge.

The OS X update overhauls the iBooks service, offers a revamped Calendar and adds Maps to desktop and laptop devices for the first time.
The iPad will be more expensive than new cut-price rivals
Apple claims the software will improve the battery life and speed of its desktop and laptop devices.

It also unveiled a new range of MacBooks, starting at £849 for the 11-inch Air, up to £2,199 for the 15-inch Pro.

A new Mac Pro desktop computer will be available later this year, priced at up to £3,299.

Stuart Mills of gadget website Pocket Lint said: "The iPads are going to be big sellers for Christmas, especially as many customers work in a two-year cycle.

"The iPad is a market-leader for a reason, and it's going to sell bucketloads."

LG's G FLex is expected to launch in Europe early next year

Just weeks after Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Round, LG's G Flex smartphone, which features a vertical curve in contrast to the Round's horizontal arc, went on sale in South Korea.
Neither device can be bent or folded, with manufacturers restricted by rigid components, such as the battery.

Samsung 'Plans Three-Sided Phone Display'

This handset, which could launch next year, will reportedly feature a wraparound screen to display messages on the side and front.

Samsung's Galaxy Round was the first handset to feature a curved display
Samsung is reportedly building a mobile phone with a three-sided display that allows messages to be read at an angle.
The company, which launched the world's first curved phone screen, the Galaxy Round, last month, is said to be working on an upgrade to its Youm series of flexible OLED screens.
The handset could go on sale in the second half of next year, according to a report by Bloomberg.

As well as displaying text and email messages, the phone's wraparound screen could potentially display share prices and notifications.
It is unclear whether the handset would form part of Samsung's popular S or Note series, or launch as a new line altogether, the report claimed.
The race to release innovative products first is fierce.

Samsung Phone Update Leaves Users Furious

The latest update to Samsung's Galaxy S3 has caused users problems

Samsung smartphone users have reported their handsets have crashed, frozen or even developed battery problems after downloading the latest software update.
The 4.3.3 update was supposed to provide support for the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, the HomeSync function, and various graphics, performance and multimedia improvements.
However, dozens of users said they had suffered a range of problems with their Galaxy S3.
According to posts on Samsung UK's Facebook page, the S3 is the model most affected, but there have been a handful of users who have also reported problems with the S4.
One of the users, James Coughlin, wrote on the page: "Ive always praised Samsung never had any huge issues until 3 days ago.
"My s3 battery is useless and the when you press the home button it takes up to 30 secs to wake the screen up.
"And as for my s4 it crashed just tryin to upload 4.3. Not impressed at all I might have second thoughts about getting the note3."

The update was supposed to provide support to the Galaxy Gear
Mathew Yates wrote: "Have to say that your jellybean 4.3 update for the galaxy s3 has completely ruined my phone. Thanks alot samsung. Brilliant work!"
Some of the users report having problems making and receiving SMS text messages while others say the phone takes a long time to come out of sleep mode or has a shorter battery life.
Others said they have had to remove the battery multiple times before the phone works without any problems.
Wayne Jones said: "5+ battery pulls to get my s3 back working after this disastrous 4.3 update. How can a company the size of Samsung release an update like this?
"If I did this in my job , id get the sack. Oh and my battery goes down faster than my bank balance , which I thought was impossible. One unhappy Samsung customer."
Samsung replied to everyone who has complained on the Facebook page with the same message.
It wrote: "We appreciate your patience while we work on this. As soon as we have further information, we’ll update you through our social and service channels. Thank you for bearing with us."
A number of technology blogs reported that Samsung had suspended the rollout of the update and was investigating the problems.
A spokeswoman for Samsung said: "As we are currently investigating the reported issues with Galaxy S3 4.3 Jelly Bean update, the upgrading service has been temporarily suspended.
"We are committed to providing customers with the best possible mobile experience, and will ensure to resume the upgrading service at the earliest possibility."

!!! WOW for PlayStation 4 Sales !!!

PlayStation 4 Sells A Million On Launch Day
Sony says its next-generation console had a "phenomenal" first day as Microsoft prepares to enter the battle with its Xbox One.

The PlayStation 4 console sold more than a million units on its first day, according to Sony.
The new machine went on sale in the US and Canada on Friday, and is being  released in Europe and Latin America on November 29.
Andrew House, head of Sony Computer Entertainment, called the response "phenomenal" and said sales were still going strong.
"We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support," he said.
Sony has said it expects to shift five million PS4 consoles by April.
Sky News' review of the console found it delivers on the hardware front and praised its sleek design but, like a number of other testers, thought the games available at launch were "fairly limp".
There were also a few teething troubles on launch day, with the PlayStation Network online portal crashing under the strain of people logging in.
Microsoft is gearing up for the debut of its own next-generation console on Friday and will be hoping to hold on to existing fans as well as tempt any "floating gamers".
The Xbox One is £80 more than the PS4 at £429, but comes bundled with the new version of the Kinect movement sensor.

The truth about Android

With Android's new KitKat operating system waiting in the wings to launch, here's a look at 10 things worth knowing about the history of Google's mobile software.

1) The Android operating system wasn't actually made by Google. It was developed in 2003 by Android Inc., a company named apparently after its founder's nickname - given to him due to an obsession with robots.

Google had backed the company and bought it in 2005.

Android was originally developed by its makers as a platform for digital cameras, to weave apps into them.

But eventually they changed their focus to smartphones fearing the days of the digital camera were numbered thanks to mobile usage.

2) When Google bought Android Inc. a spokesman for the search engine giant said: "We acquired Android because of the talented engineers and great technology."

Little could they have known what that would bring. Android has now been activated on ONE BILLION devices, so it was announced in September.

And while analysts all have different views when it comes to market share between Android and iOS, recent figures from Kantar for the UK show Google as having 56% compared to Apple's 27.5.

3) It was back on November 5 2007 that Google first officially announced what was known as the Open Handset Alliance.

Its aim was to create an open platform - based on Linux - for mobile phones, enabling them to run Google's products.

That platform was Android and it heralded the headlines and rumours about the first Google Phone - dubbed the GPhone - to compete with Apple's iPhone.

But Android's creator Andy Rubin said at the time: "We hope Android will be the foundation for many new phones and will create an entirely new mobile experience for users, with new applications and new capabilities we can’t imagine today."

4) The first ever mobile handset to run Android was the HTC Dream or T-Mobile G1 as UK users may remember it.

It featured a slide-up screen that revealed a keyboard and it appeared in late 2008.

In the US it was followed by the Motorola Droid, which came out a year later.

5) Google is famous for naming its Android OS updates after sweet treats.

The first was the 1.5 release in April 2009 dubbed Cupcake. This was followed by Donut (1.6) a few months later, and an upgrade to 2.0 - or Eclair - in October of the same year.

Eclair was a massive step forward and brought Google Maps Navigation to the software, allowing it to compete with dedicated sat-nav systems.

New Configuration settings for mobile (MTN)

Settings for MTN Data Services Wap/Internet Browsing
Any data device that you use needs to be configured to use MTN's extensive mobile data network. Your MTN-branded USB modem or data card has already been configured so you do not have to worry about that.
If you're not using an MTN-branded device, you can request for MTN's internet browsing settings (also referred to as APN settings or packet data settings on some phones) by typing the word SETTINGS as an SMS and send to 3888, free of charge.
If your handset or device allows over-the-air updates, you will receive an SMS notifying you to save setup information that the network will send to you. Please save the settings as soon as they are delivered to your phone to avoid deleting them in error.
Also, if you currently enjoy Internet browsing using your 3.5G enabled handset on MTN's data network, chances are that your handset is already configured to use MTN's data network. You may however sendSETTINGS to 3888 to be double sure!
For handsets or other devices that need to be configured manually (e.g. most Windows-based handsets), you will need to configure the data settings on your handset with the settings information provided below:
  • Account Name = MTN GPRS

New Configuration Setting for Mobile Phones (Airtel)

Steps to follow in setting up your Internet and Wap setting on mobile phones
To have access to the Internet on your mobile phones and tablets or other data enabled devices, you will have to ensure your APN settings are configured correctly on the Airtel 3.75G network.
APN simply means: Access Point Name. This is a requirement on the network for all data users. It is your gateway to accessing the web on the Airtel Network. Our APN is: internet.ng.airtel.comIf your phone/device has no APN settings or incorrect APN settings, you would be unableto access the web.
Typically, once you insert the Airtel SIM, the settings are automatically configured. However, a need to configure manually might occur. This varies from device to device.
